About Woodland Animals

Woodland Animal Garden Ornaments: Bears, Badgers, Otters and Hedgehogs

Woodland animal garden ornaments at Backyard Bliss is the woodland-fauna lens on the catalogue: nine pieces covering the bears, badgers, otters, hedgehogs, the green frog and the squirrel shapes that read as living-at-the-edge-of-British-woodland. The River Otter Ornament, Bronze Bear w/Cub, Mother Bear and Cub, Badger and Badger Cub, Hedgehog and Baby, Gorgeous Green Frog Ornament, Badger, Large Wall Mounted Bear Head and Baby Squirrel New Bronze sit together as a single themed grouping.

The bears and badger pieces

The Bronze Bear w/Cub and Mother Bear and Cub are the headline bear pieces, both pair-and-cub sculpts in bronze-effect paint over cast resin, sized for a flagstone at the base of a tree or a quiet corner of a gravel bed. The Badger and Badger Cub carries the same pair logic in badger form, lower-profile and longer than the bears, suited to the front of a fern bed or the foot of a planted shrub. The Badger on its own is the single-piece alternative for a smaller spot. The Large Wall Mounted Bear Head is the only wall piece in the woodland set, mounted at face height on a brick or render wall.

The otter, hedgehog, frog and squirrel pieces

The River Otter Ornament is the slim arched-back piece for a pond margin or fern bed, painted in warm brown over cast resin. The Hedgehog and Baby is the gentle close-pass piece, a mother-and-baby pair in soft brown finish, sized for a step or paving slab in a quiet corner. The Gorgeous Green Frog Ornament is the pond-side detail piece in bright green paint. The Baby Squirrel New Bronze is the smallest piece in the woodland set, a single bronze-finish squirrel that finds its place on a tree-stump top or a planter rim where the bushy tail catches the eye.

How to compose a woodland corner

Woodland pieces work best grouped rather than scattered. A bear-and-cub piece at the base of a tree, a badger pair at the front of a fern bed, a hedgehog mother-and-baby on a flagstone in between, and a squirrel on a nearby stump or planter rim builds a layered woodland corner that looks like a small habitat. The Large Wall Mounted Bear Head above the grouping (face height on a wall behind) anchors the composition vertically. Avoid scattering one woodland piece in an otherwise farmyard or formal border; the woodland read needs companions to land.

Cast resin and cast stone through outdoor life

Most pieces are cast resin painted in sun-fast warm-brown or bronze finishes, frost-proof and ready for outdoor life year-round. The Large Wall Mounted Bear Head is reconstituted cast stone, heavier and mounted with two screw fixings into brick or render. The Gorgeous Green Frog Ornament's bright green paint is sun-fast and holds through outdoor sun. A soft brush across painted detail twice a year keeps pollen and lichen out of the surface. Tip standing water off any horizontal surface before a hard frost.

For the wall piece on its own, see wall bear garden ornaments. For the otter on its own, otter garden ornaments. For the wider single-animal lenses, bear garden ornaments, badger garden ornaments, hedgehog garden ornaments and frog garden ornaments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does delivery, returns and contact work?

UK delivery is free on orders over £50, with a flat rate below that. Orders ship within one working day from our Cotswolds workshop, packed in recyclable materials. Returns are accepted within 30 days for a full refund, with no restocking fees. If something arrived damaged or you need help choosing, email hello@backyardbliss.co.uk and we usually reply within a few hours.

Which woodland piece anchors a corner best?

The Bronze Bear w/Cub or Mother Bear and Cub are the natural anchor pieces: pair-and-cub sculpts with enough mass to hold a corner against a tree base or the back of a gravel run. The Large Wall Mounted Bear Head adds vertical anchor on a wall behind the grouping. The smaller pieces (otter, hedgehog pair, squirrel, frog) scatter around the anchor at smaller scale to build the layered woodland read.

Will real wildlife use these pieces as cover?

Sometimes yes, in small ways. Hedgehogs occasionally shelter beside a low cast-resin piece during the day; ground beetles take cover under the base; spiders weave webs across the edges. None of the pieces is engineered as a wildlife habitat, so you should not expect them to replace a proper hedgehog house or a log pile. They sit alongside actual wildlife rather than housing it.

Can the bronze-finish pieces live outside year-round?

Yes. Cast resin, frost-proof, painted in UV-stable bronze that handles a wet January and a July heatwave without cracking or fading. The bronze tone deepens slightly over the first wet winter and holds from there. A soft brush across the painted detail twice a year keeps pollen and lichen out of the surface. Lift any piece sitting in deep sodden mulch onto a flagstone through deep winter to stop base algae.

How tall is the Mother Bear and Cub?

Larger than the Bronze Bear w/Cub, both pieces being seated-mother-with-cub sculpts but at slightly different scales. Exact dimensions and current price are on each product page. The Mother Bear and Cub sits well at the base of a mature tree where the larger scale matches the tree-trunk diameter; the Bronze Bear w/Cub fits a smaller corner or a planted-pot edge.

What goes on the wall above a woodland grouping?

The Large Wall Mounted Bear Head is the obvious wall piece, mounted at face height (between 1.6 and 1.8 metres) on a brick or render wall above or behind the free-standing grouping. Two screw fixings into wall plugs hold it firmly. The wall piece anchors the composition vertically and gives the woodland corner a watching presence above the ground-level pieces.

Are these pieces British wildlife or international?

A mix. The badgers, hedgehogs, frog and otter are British woodland and waterway native species; British gardeners will likely have seen the live equivalents. The bears are not British wildlife (no wild bears in Britain), they reference North American or European brown bears, but they fit visually inside a woodland grouping. The bronze squirrel reads as British grey-or-red. The mix works fine; nobody minds a cast-resin bear cub beside a real-world hedgehog.
