Why a butterfly garden takes static pieces

The butterflies do the moving. The ornaments anchor. A buddleia hedge full of peacocks and red admirals in late August is busy already; the role of the ornament is to give the eye somewhere to settle when the wings are not in the air. A weighty Large Garden Tortoise Statue at the foot of the buddleia, painted shell warming in the afternoon sun, gives a butterfly a low landing platform and gives the eye a fixed point. The Colourful Kingfisher on a low stake beside the wildflower strip is the height accent. The Sleeping Dog curls into the base of the shrub.

The bigger pieces and the close-pass ones

Chilla the Gorilla, the Large Garden Tortoise and the Orangutan Statue Set are the heavy focal points, each one happy to hold a corner of the pollinator garden through a summer of insect traffic. The Goose Ornament and Rasher the Pig are mid-scale, painted bright and well suited to a gravel-path edge near the marjoram. Perky Penguins, the Westie, the River Otter and the Sleeping Dog are the close-pass pieces, scaled for a planter rim or a step where you brush past them on the way to the back of the border.

Where the pieces sit best

Set one weighty piece a few paces behind the buddleia hedge as the anchor (the Tortoise or Chilla works for this), one or two close-pass pieces among the wildflower stems (the Penguins, the Westie), and the Kingfisher on a stake at the front edge of the strip. Leave the airspace above the buddleia clear so the butterfly flight paths stay open. The ornaments fill the visual gaps when the wings settle, the planting fills them when they are in the air.

Finish, care and a wet British year

All the pieces are cast resin, finished in paint that keeps its colour through several outdoor summers, made to handle a wet January and a July heatwave without cracking or fading. None of them need winter storage. A soft brush once a year clears wind-blown pollen, especially useful on the Goose's white and the Kingfisher's blue. Skip the power wash, painted resin is softer than reconstituted stone and a high-pressure jet strips the detail.
