About Planter Garden Ornaments & Statues

Pots and Planters: The Grey Dove Planter

Pots and planters at Backyard Bliss is a one-piece range right now: the Grey Dove Planter, the only ornament-as-planter shape we currently carry. A soft-grey dove cast in resin with a shallow hollow at the back, shaped to hold a small planting of trailing sedum, a creeping thyme or a tuft of moss. Frost-proof, painted in a UV-stable grey that softens against tree bark or pond-margin planting.

The Grey Dove Planter

The Grey Dove Planter is a gentle softly-rounded dove shape with a shallow hollow scooped out of the back, sized to hold a small trailing plant rather than a full container display. The grey painted finish reads warm against tree bark, soft against green leafy planting, and quiet against a stone wall. Cast resin throughout, heavy enough to sit on its own without pegging, light enough to lift and reposition when the planting changes around it. Best placed a couple of paces back from a tree base, beside a pond margin, or at the foot of a planted shrub.

Honest about a one-piece range

This is the only ornament-as-planter we carry. We do not sell traditional garden pots, terracotta planters or large tubs; this is a sculptural planter, where the ornament is the piece and the planting is a small accent. If you want full container planting at scale, you are better off at a garden centre that stocks pots in volume. If you want a single decorative planter that doubles as a piece of garden sculpture, this is its home.

What to plant in the hollow

The hollow is shallow, so the planting wants shallow roots. A trailing sedum (any of the smaller varieties) drapes nicely over the back edge; a creeping thyme adds a soft herb scent at close pass; a tuft of moss reads beautifully against the grey paint; a small alpine clump (sempervivums work well) holds for years with almost no care. Skip deep-rooted plants (lavender, rosemary, larger grasses) because the hollow does not hold the rootball. A bit of free-draining compost in the hollow holds moisture without waterlogging.

Finish and care through winter

Cast resin, frost-proof, painted grey in a UV-stable finish that handles a wet British winter and a July heatwave without cracking or fading. The hollow with planting in it copes well through winter; the planting itself does most of the work holding the moisture. Tip excess water out before a hard frost so the hollow does not freeze with standing water inside (this is the only winter care needed). A soft brush across the grey surface twice a year keeps pollen and pond debris from settling.

For the bird-shaped pieces nearby, see metal bird garden ornaments where the Grey Dove Planter also sits as a bird shape. For the working pond-side pieces (birdbaths, feeders), the bird feeders and baths range covers that side. For every bird piece we carry, browse birds. For the cleaner sculptural lens on the same dove, see modern bird garden ornaments. The wider resin garden ornaments range gathers every cast-resin piece in the catalogue, and garden gifts carries the dove as a gift-framed piece for a fellow gardener.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does delivery, returns and contact work?

UK delivery is free on orders over £50, with a flat rate below that. Orders ship within one working day from our Cotswolds workshop, packed in recyclable materials. Returns are accepted within 30 days for a full refund, with no restocking fees. If something arrived damaged or you need help choosing, email hello@backyardbliss.co.uk and we usually reply within a few hours.

Is the Grey Dove the only planter you carry?

Yes. The Grey Dove Planter is the only ornament-as-planter shape in the catalogue. We are honest about that rather than padding the range. We do not stock traditional terracotta pots or large containers; this is a sculptural planter, where the dove shape is the piece and the planting is a small accent at the back hollow.

How deep is the planting hollow?

Shallow rather than deep, sized for low-rooted plants. A trailing sedum, creeping thyme, sempervivum, or a tuft of moss all suit it; deeper-rooted plants like lavender, rosemary or larger ornamental grasses do not, the hollow does not hold the rootball. A bit of free-draining compost in the hollow gives the planting enough to hold moisture without waterlogging.

Can I leave the planted dove outside in winter?

Yes. The cast-resin construction is frost-proof and the painted grey finish holds through a wet January and a July heatwave without cracking. The planting in the hollow copes well through winter; the only care needed is tipping any excess standing water out before a hard frost so the hollow does not freeze with a pool of ice inside.

What does it pair well with in the border?

Quieter planting and bird-themed pieces. A clipped box or fern bed sets off the grey nicely. For paired bird ornaments, the Colourful Kingfisher (a few paces away at the front of a damp border) or the Radiant Robins (closer in, on a pot rim) both sit well with the dove. The Bird in Hands Birdbath as a working piece across the planting completes a bird-themed corner.

How heavy is it?

Heavy enough to sit on its own without pegging, light enough to lift and reposition when the planting changes. Cast resin throughout. Exact weight and dimensions are on the product page along with current price. The planted weight (with compost and a small sedum) is only marginally higher; you can still move it season to season.

Where else does this piece appear in the catalogue?

The Grey Dove Planter also sits in the bird-themed ranges. See metal bird garden ornaments where it appears as a bird shape rather than a planter, and birds for the wider bird-piece catalogue. Different lens, same piece.
