About Metal Garden Ornaments & Statues

Metal Garden Ornaments: Copper Feeders, Aluminium and Welded Steel

Metal garden ornaments at Backyard Bliss is the catalogue's metalwork piece for buyers who want copper, aluminium or welded steel rather than cast resin or stone. Small pieces are hand-formed Copper Bird Feeders (Pear, Apple, combo, Modern), the Metal Grate and the Metal Bird Feeder Set. Lawn anchors include the Aluminium Turtle, the 5ft Metal Giraffe, the Preening Pair and Family Set, and the life-size Bull, Zebra and Rhino Sculpture.

Copper feeders for the small birds

Copper holds detail well in a hand-formed piece, and the Pear, Apple and Modern bird feeders are made for a tree branch or a shepherd's hook at finch-landing height. Out of the workshop they read coppery-bright. A wet winter or two softens them to a bluish-green verdigris, which suits a planted garden more than a steel that stays clean. The Metal Grate and Metal Bird Feeder Set are powder-coated steel, a darker matt read that disappears into a yew hedge backdrop. None of them need bringing in over winter. A wire brush over the perches in spring clears any pollen and seed-husk.

The welded-steel sculptures for a lawn

The 5ft Giraffe and the Preening Pair are the manageable showpieces, sized for a planted corner under a silver birch or beside a tall planter. The Life-Size Bull at lifesize scale, the Lifesize Zebra and the Life-Size Metal Rhino Sculpture are paddock and driveway pieces, sized for an open lawn or a sweeping gravel approach rather than a back garden. The Aluminium Turtle is the close-pass piece, small, light enough for a windowsill or a planter rim. None of these are cast bronze. The finish is welded steel patinated to read brown-bronze from a few paces back.

Where the metal pieces sit outside

A welded-steel sculpture wants firm ground. A flat slab, a compacted gravel pad, or a level lawn corner all work. The Bull and Rhino need a delivery palette and two adults to position, so check access, gate width, path turn, before ordering. The bird feeders need a clear hanging point a couple of metres up, away from a fence cats can ambush from. The Aluminium Turtle sits fine on a step or a low wall. Avoid leaving the giraffes in sodden mulch through winter; the steel feet handle the wet, but the patina holds longest with a paver underneath.

Finish, weathering and a wet British year

Powder-coated and patinated metalwork is specified for outdoor life through every British season. Copper darkens to verdigris over time, which is the point of choosing copper. The brown-bronze patina on the welded steel benefits from a soft sponge wash once a year if you're near a busy road, less often otherwise. Skip the power wash on the bird feeders, the copper seams are softer than the read suggests. For the same pool with bronze framing, see the bronze garden ornaments range. For metalwork dog ornaments, the metal dog range. For giraffes specifically, the metal giraffe range.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does delivery, returns and contact work?

UK delivery is free on orders over £50, with a flat rate below that. Orders ship within one working day from our Cotswolds workshop, packed in recyclable materials. Returns are accepted within 30 days for a full refund, with no restocking fees. If something arrived damaged or you need help choosing, email hello@backyardbliss.co.uk and we usually reply within a few hours.

What materials are these pieces actually made of?

Three. The bird feeders are hand-formed copper (Pear, Apple, Modern, the combo) or powder-coated steel (the Grate and the Metal Bird Feeder Set). The Turtle is cast aluminium. The Giraffes, the Bull, the Zebra and the Rhino are welded steel with a brown-patinated finish that reads bronze from a few paces back. No solid bronze, no zinc.

Will the copper bird feeders weather to verdigris?

Yes, over a couple of British winters. Out of the workshop they read coppery-bright. Wet weather and a few cycles of frost soften the surface to the bluish-green verdigris most buyers want. If you prefer the bright copper for longer, a soft wax once a year slows the patina, but most gardeners are happy to let it happen.

What size garden suits the life-size pieces?

The 5ft Giraffe and the Preening Pair sit fine in a normal back-garden planted corner. The Life-Size Bull, Zebra and Rhino are bigger again, paddock-edge, driveway-sweep, country-property pieces rather than small-back-garden statues. Check open space before ordering the lifesize range, full dimensions are on the product page.

Do the metal pieces need bringing in over winter?

None of them. Powder-coated steel, welded patinated steel and aluminium all handle a wet January and a July heatwave without issue. Copper just keeps weathering. The Aluminium Turtle is fine on a step or windowsill year-round. A soft sponge wash once a year keeps the brown patina on the giraffes crisp.

What care do the welded-steel sculptures need?

Very little. A soft sponge wash once a year, more often if a piece sits beside a busy road that throws up grime. Avoid leaving the giraffes' feet directly in sodden mulch through winter; a paver or flagstone underneath extends the patina. No sealant needed.

How do these compare with cast-resin bronze-effect pieces?

Different game. Cast-resin bronze-effect pieces (the bronze hare, bronze deer or bronze pig ranges) are painted resin, lighter, smaller, less expensive. The pieces here are actual metalwork, with the heft, the patina and the long-term weight that goes with it.
